Who we are?
Tailored Leisure is a Disability Charity, whose mission is to focus on ‘Ability not Disability!’ We encourage our members who are local disabled people/people with long term conditions, to engage the best they can in our community fitness, leisure, wellness and volunteering opportunities (available across the North East of England) which are adapted to support their participation.

The Sit-to-be-Fit Programme and its benefits:
Our Sit-to-be-Fit programme is making a difference! We have received some great positive feedback from our disabled clients and partners about the benefits of the programme and how it is helping them lead healthier lives and improving their overall wellbeing! The programme offers adapted/accessible exercise routines for varying abilities. The exercises are seated, to support people with low fitness levels, may struggle to stand or get to the floor to exercise.
The adaptive exercises support improving physical health, enhancing cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength, flexibility, and co-ordination, which can lead to maintaining/or better physical functioning in performing daily living tasks - which is very important to disabled people!

Other important benefits our clients have reported include reduction/management of weight; helps to reduce risk of illness; improves mobility; boosts mood; reduces anxiety/depression; improves self-confidence/esteem.
Sit-to-be-Fit Online
Due to these many benefits, we have witnessed in the local community, we have decided to make our programme more accessible to people who may not yet feel confident to access our services in the community or, who may not be able to visit our Community Hub or Outreach Services. Also, we recognise that some people prefer to exercise in the comfort of their own home, with the autonomy to exercise when they feel they want to.

There is a suite of different seated exercise classes to choose from, ranging from Muscle Strength, Boxercise, Yoga, Aerobics and Tai Chi. A wellbeing programme is also on offer to help manage living with a disability.

We hope you enjoy the classes available and making those important choices, to a more active and happier you!
DISCLAIMER: You should exercise only within your own ability and should you feel any pain you should stop. Tailored Leisure offers these independent fitness videos to use in your own time and accept no liability to illness or injury.

Classes Information

Seated Yoga and Aerobics
Seated Yoga
The class incorporates flow of movement and static stretches, whilst connecting with the breath. Yoga helps to alleviate tension and stiffness in the body, improve/maintain flexibility and promotes good posture, can also improve breathing, relieve stress and anxiety. These sessions are often finished with a relaxing meditation session, which focuses on the breath, calming the body and mind.
*Options are given to do upper body stretches only or to stretch legs too, if possible. These yoga classes are adapted, using props such as chairs/tables, belts and blocks, to make yoga more accessible.
Seated Aerobics
This class consists of teaching a range of different movements and routines using both arms and legs (if possible). Designed to get the heart rate up gradually and then cool back down, finishing with some low intensity strength work for the arms and some stretches. The session starts with smaller range of movements and gradually builds to larger range of movements (if possible), to increase intensity, get the heart rate up and ultimately improve cardio/mobility. Options are given to work within your ability and lower intensity if needed during the routines.
*Dumbbells or bottled water/tin of beans can be used for the muscle strength exercises at the end of this routine.

Seated Tai Chi
Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art that consists of simple and gentle movements that promote relaxation and well-being. In these classes you will learn different Tai Chi terms and sequences, whilst connecting with the breath. Physically Tai Chi can help with mobility/flexibility and mentally, can have a positive impact on mood. Tai chi is a gentle, low-impact exercise that can help balance your body and mind.
*These classes are mostly upper body exercises, with some leg movements at times. No equipment is required.

Seated Stretch and Strength Class
Within these classes there is a wide variety of different exercises offered, to really challenge the body from head-to-toe, with the aim of building strength, stamina and mobility. You certainly get a work out with Asha! During the classes you are reminded to work within your ability and use what leg movement you may have . If there is no mobility in the legs, upper body and arm exercises are built into the routine to support participation.
*A soft ball and dumbbells are used in the classes, to assist with the exercises that are performed.
*If using legs and arms, this can be a high energy class, to really challenge yourself, whilst of course having fun at the same time…Enjoy!

Seated Muscle Strength, Boxercise and Seated Stretch Classes
During the boxercise element of the session participants do boxing sequences that aim to raise the heart rate from a seated position and ideally improve cardio. The muscle strength element of the class helps to develop stronger muscles as well as the bones….it can help with good posture, prevent injuries and bring balance to the body - not forgetting it can also build confidence/self-esteem and helps individuals to feel good about themselves.
Seated Stretch Class
This class complements the Muscle Strength and Boxercise Class. Stretching the muscles used in the previous sessions. This stretch session can help to improve mobility and flexibility and is important to counteract stiffness in the body.
*These classes are all upper body exercises – no leg movements are required. For muscle strength exercises, dumbbells or a bottle of water/tin of beans can be used for weights.
