Employability Skills and a Football Camp in South Tyneside – how a placement is shaping one young man’s future.
Liam Keightley joined Tailored Leisure in October 2024 to build his employability skills after completing a Level 3 course in Coaching.

At 20 years old, this was Liam’s first volunteering and placement experience. Since joining, he has developed skills in health and safety, administration, social media, activity planning, and community support.
When Liam started, he had low confidence. With encouragement from the Tailored Leisure team, he has grown into a more confident and capable volunteer. His placement has helped him build life
skills, workplace experience, independence, and travel confidence.

Liam is now planning an Easter football camp for other young people, using his coaching skills and the experience gained through his placement. He successfully applied for funding from Sported and is being supported to plan and deliver the project from start to finish.

Liam has autism and has previously been supported through an Education, Health and Care Plan. His lived experience helps him understand some of the challenges faced by other young people with special educational needs and disabilities, making his contribution especially valuable.

He has also supported Get Out Get Active activities and Tailored Leisure’s Christmas Bowling Bonanza.

Through his placement, Liam has discovered an interest in administration and hopes to move into paid employment after completing his experience with Tailored Leisure.
Hilary Fletcher
Finding Confidence, Connection and Better Mobility Through Gentle Activity
Hilary first joined our sessions in November, attending on Mondays. After retiring in December, she began coming every Monday and Tuesday, making the sessions a regular and meaningful part of her weekly routine.

For Hilary, the main reason for joining was simple but important: to get out of the house, spend time with others, and take part in gentle activity that could support her health and wellbeing.Hilary lives

with both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Since joining, she feels the sessions have helped improve her mobility, especially in her hands and arms. This has made a positive difference in her day-to-day life and has supported her new hobby of card making, something she really enjoys.

But for Hilary, the sessions are not only about movement. They are also about friendship, conversation and feeling part of a welcoming community.

Hilary’s Story
“I started coming here in November on a Monday. Then, when I retired in December, I started to come every Monday and Tuesday.

My main reason for joining was to get out of the house for an hour or so and to help me with my arthritis. I have both rheumatoid and osteoarthritis.

Since joining, I feel this has helped me with my mobility, especially my hands and arms, which in return helps me with my card making, which is my new hobby.
But most of all, I love the people and the chat.”

The Impact
Hilary’s story shows how accessible community activities can support people in many ways. Gentle movement can help with mobility, confidence and independence, while regular social connection can reduce isolation and improve emotional wellbeing.
Through attending the sessions, Hilary has found a place where she can stay active, enjoy conversation, meet people, and continue doing the hobbies she loves.
Melanie’s Story
Finding Independence, Friendship and Confidence Through Tailored Leisure
Tailored Leisure has become a lifeline for Melanie, who lives with Multiple Sclerosis. As her mobility became more limited in her late 40s, Melanie found that traditional exercise classes were no longer suitable for her.

Having always been an active and independent person, this change was difficult. Before joining Tailored Leisure, Melanie felt restricted by where she could go and what she could do. She often

needed support from others, which was upsetting because independence had always been important to her.
After contacting Tailored Leisure, Melanie began attending accessible exercise classes designed to support people with disabilities and long-term health conditions. Through the sessions, she has been able to keep active in a way that works for her body, build confidence, and regain a sense of independence.

The sessions have also helped Melanie socially. When mobility becomes limited, life can sometimes feel smaller, but through Tailored Leisure, Melanie has met new friends, enjoyed conversation, and become part of a caring and welcoming community.

For Melanie, Tailored Leisure is more than an exercise class. It is a place where people are supported, encouraged, and made to feel included.

Melanie’s Story
“My name is Melanie and I have MS. This slowly began to get worse in my late 40s. I wanted to exercise, as I’ve always been an active person, but conventional exercise classes weren’t an option anymore.

Then I contacted Tailored Leisure and started their classes. When you have limited mobility, the world becomes a smaller place, but through the classes I have met new friends and I am keeping fit.

Before Tailored Leisure, it was depressing that I was limited to where I could go and what I could do. Now I can do exercises independently. Before, always needing someone to support me was upsetting, as I was always independent.

I would say, if you’re reading this, come along. The team who run the classes and make a cuppa afterwards are genuinely caring, good people. so what have you got to lose?”

The Impact
Melanie’s story shows how inclusive exercise and social connection can make a real difference to people living with disabilities or long-term health conditions.
Through Tailored Leisure, Melanie has found:

Improved confidence
She can take part in exercise in a way that feels safe, supportive and suitable for her needs.

Greater independence
The sessions have helped her feel more able to exercise without always needing one-to-one support.

New friendships
Melanie has met people through the classes and enjoys the social side of attending.
A stronger sense of community
The friendly team, welcoming atmosphere and simple moments like sharing a cuppa after class have helped Melanie feel connected and supported.
