Accessible Adventures: A Guide to Berwick-upon-Tweed

Updated: Apr 6

Whether you are a parent or guardian with a disability, have an adult family member with a disability or a child with a disability - going on holiday is no easy feat. Either individually or as a family, going on a holiday for people with disabilities and long-term health conditions involves numerous specific considerations, extensive accessibility planning, and often comes with additional costs.

As a mother with both cerebral palsy and two SEND children, Tara Mackings BEM experienced first hand the unique and almost insurmountable challenges that their family faced to go on holiday. She became determined to reduce barriers and create a place where families with complex needs could have a holiday - to create family memories, get some respite and have inclusive fun.

Accessible Luxury Caravan

To achieve this dream, she created Tailored Leisure's Accessible Luxury Caravan. It's a exclusive collaboration between Tailored Leisure, Haven's Berwick Holiday Park, Red Sky Foundation and Holistic Holidays that perfectly blends inclusivity, convenience, and value for money.

Red Sky Foundation

The Red Sky Foundation is a charity that saves not just the lives of children but adults across the North East and the rest of the UK by fundraising initiatives including raising over £1 Million pounds to buy a variety of equipment and also provide facilities and after care at the Children’s Heart Unit at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital, Sunderland Royal Hospital and the James Cook Hospital, Teesside. They have also purchased a number of defibrillators available to thousands and work closely with schools, communities and city centres, so they can be used in those life or death moments when someone has a cardiac arrest and when time is of the essence.

Their generosity doesn't end there - they also give back to the community to improve the lives of everyone.

For Tailored Leisure, this generosity was to update and improve our Accessible Luxury Caravan with:

  • Ceiling hoists

  • Updated lighting fixtures

  • Two TVs

  • Tilt shower chair

We are incredibly grateful to the Red Sky Foundation for these donations, which allows families with more complex needs to enjoy a short break.
